DIY AC Maintenance Made Easy

When temperatures climb, there’s nothing more comforting than stepping into a cool, air-conditioned home. But without a little routine care, your AC system can struggle—or worse, break down when you need it most. At Kendrick Heating and Air, we believe in empowering homeowners with the knowledge to take care of their systems. That’s why we’ve created this easy-to-follow HVAC checklist focused on DIY AC maintenance.

Use this guide to keep your system running smoothly and help prevent costly repairs down the line.

Monthly DIY AC Tasks

changing filters1. Change or Clean Air Filters
One of the simplest and most impactful things you can do is replace or clean your air filter. A clogged filter restricts airflow, reduces efficiency, and puts unnecessary strain on your system.

👉 Tip: Check your filter monthly, especially during peak usage months.  You should change out your filter every 3 months for optimal performance and air quality.

2. Clear the Vents and RegistersWalk through your home and ensure all air supply and return vents are free from obstructions like furniture, rugs, or curtains. Clean off dust or debris with a vacuum.

3. Inspect the Outdoor Unit
Before the summer heat hits, clear leaves, grass, and other debris from around your outdoor condenser unit. Make sure there’s at least two feet of clearance around it for proper airflow.

👉 DIY Tip: Use a garden hose (on a gentle setting) to rinse off dirt from the condenser coils. Always power off the unit first.  For a more thorough cleaning, contact us to get a full cleaning.  We use cleaning solutions that don't affect any coating on the coils so that your warranty is not voided. 4. Test the Thermostat
Set your thermostat to cooling mode and lower the temperature to make sure the AC kicks on. If your system isn’t responding properly, it might be time for a professional inspection.

5. Check for Unusual Noises or Odors
When your AC first turns on for the season, listen for any rattling, grinding, or strange smells. These are early warning signs that something may be off.

Annual DIY AC Tasks

6. Clean Condensate Drain Line
A clogged condensate drain can cause water damage and system shutdowns. Flush it with a mixture of water and vinegar once a year to keep it clear.

7. Inspect Insulation on Refrigerant Lines
Check the insulation on the refrigerant lines going to your outdoor unit. Damaged insulation can reduce efficiency and should be replaced.

8. Seal Air Leaks Around the Home
Use caulk or weather stripping to seal gaps around windows and doors. Keeping conditioned air inside means your AC won’t have to work as hard.
